Canada Day will look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate our 153rd birthday in grand Canada style with your love!
From virtual celebrations, to indoor fun, to revelling in the great outdoors, we’ve got some great ideas to mark the day.
Make It Maple
It only makes sense to kick off our National Day of Celebration with some maple syrup, the secret sauce that makes Canada the sweetest country on earth. Whip up a batch of heart-shaped pancakes topped with fresh blueberries and strawberries. Slather them in some yummy maple syrup and the celebration has begun!
BBQ
Keeping with the food theme, why not put together a Canada Day Backyard BBQ? Pack up the old, portable charcoal grill and head outdoors.
Want to put together an epic BBQ menu? Your patties won’t sit in ‘burgatory’ with these homegrown toppings!
Start with BACON…of course, then add Maple Cheddar or Cheese Curds, eh? Try a maple mustard sauce (1/4 cup Dijon mustard sweetened with 2 tbsp of that maple syrup – sweeten to taste), fresh field tomatoes and homemade dill pickles. Heaven on a bun!
Finish off your menu with these Canadian classics: Corn on the Cob, Poutine and Nanaimo Bars.
Picnic in the Park
If you’d rather head out and find a shady tree in the park, here are some ideas of what to pack in your picnic basket:
Picnic Menu
BLT’s
Maple Glazed Doughnuts or Butter Tarts
Ketchup Chips – National Snack of Canada
Smarties or Coffee Crisp – Canada’s Candy
Potato Salad
Canada Dry Summer Cooler Sipper
Pocket Yahtzee
Travel Cribbage
Fun Activities
If you’re going to the beach, park or conservation area, take your bikes along for a trail ride. Follow that up with the big match – put together your portable badminton set and work up an appetite for your Canada Day Picnic.
If you’re more into lounging together on a blanket in the park, be sure to pack your bluetooth speaker and download a Canada Day Playlist.
Closer to Home
If you’re thinking about staying home and having a Canada Day Back-Yardy, here’s a checklist of what you may need to make it memorable:
Speaker for Canada Day Playlist
ICE ICE and more ICE baby!
Kiddie Pool for cooling down (or for your ICE)
Sprinkler
Yard games – Yardzee, Washers, Bocce Ball
Lawn chairs
Throw together a game of ‘Name That Canadian Band’ or ‘Canada Pub Quiz Challenge’! Winning prize – Tim’s Card of course!
Spice up the occasion with these adult beverages, perfect for a hot, July day on the back deck. There’s the made-in-Canada Caesar, The Okanagan Sangria or The French Canadian. Popular mocktails include the Smartini, The Gentle Breeze or The Coco Colada. Or, you may just want to keep it simple with a two-four of Canadian, of course.
If you’re staying indoors, you’ve got plenty of options for Canadian entertainment like board games, puzzles or a good Ryan Reynolds flick!
Fireworks and Entertainment
Missing the fireworks this year? Be sure to grab some sparklers for when the sun sets.
To keep you entertained, CBC will be broadcasting live concert performances throughout the day and evening on its various platforms, featuring your favourite Canadian artists.
Visit Canada.ca for a full list of activities, events and live streams happening in cities and towns across the country.
In the end, whatever you and your sweetie choose to do on Canada Day, it will be time well spent together.
Stay safe, stay strong, stay Canadian.
Happy Canada Day!
