With the dog days of summer drawing to a close and pumpkin spice season just around the corner, it’s almost time to start thinking about sweaters and sofa snuggling!
Essential Rom-Com Classics
If you need a few suggestions, here are our recommendations for the best classic Romantic Comedies to watch this fall.
❤️ Dirty Dancing • This is a lovely summer movie to send you into the fall. And what a great soundtrack. Now playing on Netflix. You’ll be swaying around the rec room after this one. Plus, nobody puts Baby in a corner. 😏
❤️ Pretty Woman (or any Julia Roberts movie) • Julia Roberts and Richard Gere chemistry! Soooo good! Neither actor was the first choice for their respective role with Dennis Quaid and John Travolta both turning down Richard Gere’s part. Sandra Bullock and Daryl Hannah both said no to Julia Roberts’ role. The film still holds up 30 years later!
❤️ Love Actually • You may want to save this one for December. It has a wonderful Christmas theme without being too over the top. This classic boasts an all-star British cast featuring Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant (of course) and Bill Nighy, just to name a few. This is definitely a favourite. Catch it now on Netflix.

❤️ Sleepless In Seattle (or any Meg Ryan movie) • This is Tom Hanks at his most adorable! And living on a house boat…hearts were literally melting in 1993 when this movie was released. A Nora Ephron classic starring Hanks & Meg Ryan in the lead roles with Bill Pullman & Rosie O’Donnell putting in appearances. The premise centres around a recently widowed man’s son who calls a radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner. The movie is loosely based around the 1957 classic An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. A true romance flick, if there was one, and a great soundtrack to accompany it.
❤️ There’s Something About Mary • This 1998 Rom-Com (heavy on the Com) is so hilarious to this day! Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz are at their comedic best and Matt Dillon keeps up with both. Stiller meets up with his dream girl from high school, even though his date with her back then was a complete disaster. Hilarity ensues! The same guys who gave you Dumb and Dumber bring you this love story, if that’s any indication.
❤️ Pretty In Pink • Classic ’80s John Hughes lovefest! Hughes muse Molly Ringwald stars as Andie along with Jon Cryer as Duckie and ’80s heartthrob Andrew McCarthy. Andie (Ringwald) is a girl who doesn’t quite fit in at school. She falls for Blaine (McCarthy), a popular, rich boy, who her best friend Duckie (Cryer) doesn’t approve of. Again, the soundtrack is just too great not to mention!

❤️ Say Anything • Director Cameron Crowe brings us this teen angst love story starring John Cusack and Ione Skye. The premise, in short – a noble and loveable underdog and a beautiful bookworm fall in love the summer before she goes off to college. The film includes the iconic scene of Cusack holding the boombox over his head outside Skye’s character’s window with Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” blasting.
❤️ Serendipity • You might think we have a bit of a thing for John Cusack and you wouldn’t be wrong. Fast forward 11 years from Say Anything to this lesser-known film from 2001 starring Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. It’s a love story to New York City as much as anything. A charming film for a Friday night in.
❤️ The Princess Bride • What’s left to be said about this classic 1987 Rob Reiner film? The Princess Bride is not only a cult classic but noted on many lists as one of the greatest love stories, funniest films and as being culturally and historically significant. There are far too many classic lines to quote and the cast is star-studded. You’ve probably seen it already, but watch it again – it’s so worth it. And have fun storming the castle!

❤️ Forgetting Sarah Marshall • One of the more recent flicks on our list, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is written by and stars Jason Segel as Peter. Devastated over a recent breakup with his TV-star girlfriend, he decides to get out of town and travels to Hawaii on vacation. Little does he know, that TV-star girlfriend…Sarah Marshall, is travelling to the same vacation destination as he is – and she’s bringing along her new boyfriend, the hilarious Russell Brand.
❤️Honourable Mention – Crazy, Stupid, Love. • Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone all star in this film. It is a sweet and smart romantic comedy about first love, long-lasting love, unrequited love and lost love. Catch it on Netflix now.
