1. West Coast Trail

The West Coast Trail is one of the best-known hiking trails in Canada. It is a multi-day hike along the rugged, southwest coast of Vancouver Island and is fully enclosed within Pacific Rim National Park. Be ready for a real challenge including some considerable climbing, wading through hip-deep rivers and trekking through heavy mud – with backpack in tow and through all kinds of weather conditions. The bad news is that the trail is closed for the remainder of 2020 due to the pandemic. The good news is that you and your partner have loads more time to get into shape for this bucket list hiking trail adventure!

2. Wild Pacific Trail

The Wild Pacific Trail is open year-round during daylight hours and is split into two sections. The exquisite scenery of the 2.6 km Lighthouse Loop is the most popular and is rated as an easy hike. The Brown’s Beach to Rocky Bluffs portion is about an 8 km return-trip hike along the ocean and through the rainforest. It is unique with various vantage points of the wild and rugged coast. The trail is located just north of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and 40 minutes from Tofino.

3. Stanley Park Seawall Trail

This spectacular loop trail is located along the seashore in Vancouver and is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the city. The trail surrounds the large, historic Stanley Park and is a go-to spot for both locals and tourists. Not necessarily a hiking trail, the Seawall loop is paved and smooth. There are 2 paths: the beachside path is designated to foot traffic and the inside path to bikes and rollerbladers.

4. Crystal Falls

 

Crystal Falls is a 6.5 km hike which takes you alongside the Upper Coquitlam River. The trail is dog-friendly and the hike takes about 2 hours to complete. It is an easy trek at a low elevation and the trail is accessible year-round. Going there during the summer is best though if you want to take a dip in the river or the canyon pools near the Falls.

5. Three Brothers Mountain

This perfect day hike in Manning Provincial Park has got it all, from rocky ridges to beautiful meadows with colourful wildflowers, to picturesque views of the Cascade Range. You’ll start on the Heather Trail at Blackwall Peak, hiking to 2,272-metre-high First Brother Mountain, the closest peak of the Three Brothers. The hike takes 6 to 8 hours to complete round trip, depending on how many photos you stop to take of the stunning surroundings!

6. Cathedral Grove

Located within MacMillan Provincial Park in central Vancouver Island, this one is ideal for couples looking for a relaxing excursion. The trails are flat and easy, and it is a short hike through a scenic forest with giant Douglas Firs. Some of these trees are as old as 800 years! Cathedral Grove is currently closed to foot traffic due to COVID-19 but watch for a possible reopening this season. The beauty of this one is that you can still take your date on a drive through the park and be surrounded by those majestic trees.

7. Jug Island Beach Trail

 

Located near Belcarra, the Jug Island Beach Trail is 5.1 km long and is best for hiking, fishing and bird-watching during the summer months. The hike goes from easy to moderate in difficulty and involves a good mix of inclines. Your efforts are rewarded when you reach the beautiful, secluded beach.

8. Iceline Trail

Take in the most breathtaking views with your partner within the first 60 minutes of this hike in Yoho National Park. The mountains and glaciers of the Yoho Valley and fantastic views of Takakkaw Falls will transport you to a completely different world! There are many variations to the hike. The length of the trail can range from 13 to 20 km round trip, with a maximum elevation gain of 874 metres.

9. Mount Work from Ross Durance Road

This 8 km trail offers picturesque vistas all along the way. Make sure you walk another 10 minutes or so beyond the marking saying you’ve reached the summit. That’s where you’ll get the best views over Saanich. Mount Work Regional Park is located in Highlands, about 30 minutes from Victoria.

10. Buntzen Lake Trail

Located near Anmore, the Buntzen Lake Trail features varied terrain over a 12 km loop. With a few rock slabs to get around, this is a moderate-level hike. Dogs are permitted on leash and the lake is visible most of the way. The trail is also great for running if you want to step it up. Lots of secluded spots are tucked away as well where you can stop and enjoy your packed snack for two!
